Presidium of the Transport Union meets in Saint Petersburg

The presidium reviewed a concept for modernising the city’s transport infrastructure and put forward proposals on bridges, the high-speed rail terminal and a city rail service.

The Transport Union of the North-West has formulated a whole package of proposals of a fundamental nature, aimed at making intra-city transport more efficient, improving the interface between waterborne and land transport, and raising the quality of service. At today’s meeting the presidium reviewed a concept for modernising the city’s transport infrastructure — the basis for a strategy covering the road network, the bridges and the renewal of rolling stock.

The president of the Union, Vladimir Khodyrev, said: “Our organisation believes it makes sense to create a system in which every project of significance for the northern capital is considered by the city administration with the view of the transport community taken into account.” Specific infrastructure questions were set out that require the joint effort of all interested parties if sound decisions are to be taken in the very near future.

The meeting discussed, among other things, where to site the rail terminal for the high-speed line between Petersburg and Moscow, the extension of the Aptekarskaya embankment around the Lopukhinsky garden, a listed site, and alternative options for the bridges across Serny Island. The proposal to revise the design of the bridge over the Sea Canal — a link in the Western High-Speed Diameter — was raised again: raising the span by almost twenty metres so that sailing ships such as the Sedov, the Kruzenshtern and the Mir can enter the Neva.

There was considerable interest in the discussion of a so-called city rail service — a kind of surface metro linking the new housing districts with the centre. The meeting also considered where to site new business centres on the reclaimed land near Vasilyevsky Island, by the Marine Façade, and the construction of the stadium on Krestovsky Island.

A resolution was adopted following the meeting.
